Sunday, November 11, 2018,

On November 11, 2018,  Maurice Knox was involved in a domestic kidnapping involving his 3 year old daughter in Gaston County, NC.   Deputies with the US Marshall Service located the vehicle he was driving, a Nissan Altima, with his daughter inside, and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.  The suspect refused to stop and a vehicle pursuit began. As the pursuit continued in Charlotte, NC, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department K-9 officer became involved on I-77 north near S. Tryon Street. The suspect continued to flee from officers and exited off of I-77 North onto Remount Rd. A short time later the suspect vehicle became involved in a motor vehicle accident with two other vehicles on Remount Road at Toomey Avenue.

A Ford Fusion that was being operated by Celeste Griffin-Churchill had been traveling east on Remount Rd when she struck by Knox's Nissan.  Both the Nissan and the Ford then struck a Dodge Challenger that was operated by Christopher Funderburk which had been traveling west on Remount Rd. Everyone involved in the crash was transported by MEDIC to the hospital.  The three-year-old female victim had not been in a child seat but was restrained in a seatbelt when the collision occurred.

The driver of the Ford, Ms. Griffin-Churchill is being treated for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.  Both the driver and passenger of the Dodge were treated for minor injuries and have been released from the hospital.  The 3 year-old victim/passenger in the Nissan is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.  The suspect, Mr. Knox has also been admitted to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Maurice Knox was found to be impaired at the time of the crash. Warrants for Arrest against Mr. Knox have been obtained by CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit/DWI Task Force officers for DWI, three (3) counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon, two (2) counts of Felony Serious Injury by Motor Vehicle, Felony Flee to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer, Felony Child Abuse/Neglect, and Reckless Driving.  These warrants will be served on the suspect once he has been released from the hospital.  In addition, there are multiple arrest warrants for Mr. Knox out of Gaston County relating to the original incident. The Gastonia Police Department is conducting the Kidnapping investigation and all questions regarding that incident should be directed towards them.
