Independence Division - Major Crash Detectives investigating a fatal pedestrian crash in the 6000 blk of Independence

Wednesday, September 26, 2018,

On Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at 7:50 p.m., officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Independence Division responded to 6025 E. Independence Blvd in response to a 911 call regarding a crash involving a motor vehicle which had struck a pedestrian. Upon their arrival, the officers located a 2000 Ford Focus and the pedestrian that had been involved in a crash. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene by MEDIC.  His identity will be released once his family has been notified of his death.  The driver of the Ford, Donna Parrish, was also located on scene but did not sustain any injuries.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Major Crash Investigations Unit, DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.   Their preliminary investigation indicates that the Ford Focus was traveling southeast on E. Independence Blvd in the second lane from the concrete barrier when it struck the pedestrian who was crossing E. Independence Blvd.  The pedestrian was not in a designated crosswalk.

The driver of the vehicle involved in this crash was screened for impairment and was found not to be impaired.  Excessive speed is also not suspected to be a contributing factor for the driver of the Focus.  Alcohol use by the pedestrian is suspected.

The crash remains under investigation.  Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Officer Kupfer with the Major Crash Investigations Unit at 704-432-2169.
