***UPDATE*** Independence Division - Homicide in the 5700 block of Pebblestone Drive

Case Update: Saturday, November 30, 2019

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have charged Carlton Stevon Benbow, DOB: 04/11/1987, for the murder of Reginald Lawrence.

After interviewing Benbow, witnesses and assessing the collected, physical evidence, Homicide Unit detectives identified Benbow as a suspect in this case.  Benbow has since been transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill, possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.  As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office.

The victim has been identified as Reginald Lawrence, DOB: 11/21/1973.  His family has been notified of his death.

Saturday, November 30, 2019

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 5700 block of Pebblestone Drive in the Independence Division.  The call for service came in at 9:57 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2019. 

Independence Division patrol officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service.  Upon arrival, officers located a male in a parking lot in the apartment complex with an apparent gunshot wound.  The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene by MEDIC. His name will be released once his family has been notified.

Witnesses informed officers that the possible suspect went into a nearby apartment.  Out of an abundance of caution, officers evacuated the other residents out of that building.  The SWAT Team responded and was able determine the suspect was not at that location.

Homicide Detectives are currently canvassing the area to determine whether there are any additional witnesses to this incident. 

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, Victim Services, CFD, Medic and Operations Command responded to the scene.
