***UPDATE*** Independence Division - Homicide in the 5200 block of North Idlewild Road

Case Update: Sunday, October 13, 2019

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged Damion Lamont Baxter, DOB: 10/25/1973, for his involvement in the murder of Deontray Love.

Continued investigation by Homicide Unit detectives has identified Baxter as a suspect in this case, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.  Baxter was interviewed by Homicide Unit detectives and subsequently transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office where he has been charged with murder.

This is an active and ongoing investigation.  As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office.

The victim in this case has been identified as Deontray Love, DOB: 10/13/1999.  His family has been notified of his death.

Saturday, October 12, 2019,

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 5200 block of N. Idlewild Road in the Independence Division.  The call for service came in at 7:52p.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2019. 

Independence Division patrol officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service.  Upon arrival officers located an adult male with an apparent gunshot wound.  The victim was transported by MEDIC to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.  The victim's name will be released once family notification has been made. 

Detectives with the Homicide Unit have responded to the scene to conduct the investigation and are canvassing the area to gather additional information.   

The initial investigation has revealed that the victim was involved in a confrontation with several individuals that he was acquainted with.  The argument started at the Fast Mart located at 7020 Lawyers Road and later continued near the intersection of N. Idlewild Road at Snow Lane which is where one of the suspects shot him.  The suspects then fled the scene.

Crime Scene Search has responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, Victim Services, RTCC, Medic, CFD, and Operations Command responded to the scene.
