Independence Division - Death investigation in the 2100 block of Rama Road

Case Update: Friday, December 6, 2019

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged an 11-year-old juvenile male and 12-year-old juvenile female, for the death of the 11-year-old male who was struck by a vehicle.  Their names will not be released due to their age.  The driver of the vehicle was not charged in this case.

During the course of the investigation, detectives determined a physical altercation took place involving the victim and suspects near the roadway.  This altercation led to the victim entering the roadway and ultimately being struck by a vehicle.  Homicide Unit detectives identified the juveniles as suspects in this case and they were transported to police headquarters to speak with detectives.  At the conclusion of the interviews, both were charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit, along with the Major Crash Unit, are conducting a death investigation at Rama Road and Cabotwood Lane in the Independence Division.  The call for service came in at 6:25 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2019.

Independence Division patrol officers responded to an accident with injury call for service.  Upon arrival, officers located a crash involving a child that was struck by a vehicle.  The child was transported to the hospital by medic and later pronounced deceased by hospital staff.  The victim's identity will be released pending family notification.

Detectives with the Homicide Unit are canvassing the area to determine whether there are any additional witnesses to this incident. 

Crime Scene Search has responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, RTCC, Medic, CFD and Operations Command responded to the scene. 

The investigation is in its early stages.  As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.
