***UPDATE*** Homicide Investigation in the North Tryon Division

Charlotte, N.C. - (Tuesday, May 18, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged Jaquarius Octavius Bryant, DOB: 04/29/1997, as a second suspect in the murder of Ray Marese Garlins

 As a result of continued investigation, Homicide Unit detectives identified Bryant as a second suspect in this case, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.  On May 17, 2021, Bryant surrendered himself to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. Homicide Unit detectives have since interviewed Bryant, who is now charged with first-degree murder.

Charlotte, N.C. - (Saturday, May 15, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged Darius Emmanuel Platt, DOB: 09/30/1999, for the murder of Ray Marese Garlins,  DOB: 11/19/1979, who is the victim in this case.  The victim's family has been notified of his death. 

Detectives with RTCC identified an electronic monitoring participant, Darius Emmanuel Platt, who was in the immediate area of the incident location at the time of the homicide. On May 15, 2021, Platt was located and arrested by the North Tryon Division CRU.  Following Platt's interview with Homicide Detectives, he was charged with First-Degree Murder and transferred to the custody of the MCSO.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, May 15, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation near the 1700 block of Finchley Drive in the North Tryon Division.

Shortly before 12:30 a.m., on May 15, 2021, officers were patrolling in the area and heard gunshots and responded.  An assault with a deadly weapon call for service then came in around 12:22 a.m. near the 1700 block of Finchley Drive.  When they arrived, they located a victim with an apparent gunshot wound outside of a residence.  The victim was pronounced deceased on scene.

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, CMPD's Operations Command, K9, CMPD Aviation Unit, Victim Services, Crime Stoppers, CFD, and Medic also assisted.
