Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Independence Division - June 27, 2021

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, June 29, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged Azbel Cruz Castro, DOB: 01/21/1997, for the murder of Emmanuel Hagos Gebru.

 

As a result of their investigation, Homicide Unit detectives identified Castro as a suspect in this case, and a murder warrant was issued for his arrest.  Castro was then located and arrested through a collaborative effort between the CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT), Canine Unit, Aviation Unit, Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), Westover Division, United States Secret Service and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.  Castro has since been interviewed by Homicide Unit detectives and transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, where he has been charged with murder.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, June 27, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation near the 5300 block of East Independence Boulevard in the Independence Division

Shortly after 2:20 a.m. on June 27, 2021, officers responded to reports of a shooting near the 5300 block of East Independence Boulevard.  When they arrived, they located Emmanuel Hagos Gebru, DOB: 5/24/1990, with an apparent gunshot wound.  The victim was transported to the hospital by MEDIC where he has since succumbed to his injuries.  His family has been notified of his death.

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.
