Case Update: Homicide Investigation In the North Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, May 27, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have additionally charged Tammy Taylor Moffett, DOB: 01/06/1968, for her involvement in this incident.

On May 26, 2021, Homicide Unit detectives interviewed Moffett as a part of the continued investigation.  At the conclusion of the interview, Moffett was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with Concealing a Death and Accessory After the Fact (Murder).

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office. Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, May 24, 2021) – The victim, in this case, has been tentatively identified as Migellic Young, DOB: 08/11/2016.  Her family has been notified of her death.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, May 21, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit, in conjunction with Missing Persons and Crimes Against Children Detectives, are conducting a homicide investigation near the 3700 block of Braden Drive in the North Division.

Missing Person's detectives responded to investigate reports that a four-year-old female had not been seen in several months. During the initial investigation, detectives received several tips and evidence that indicated foul play might have been involved. Homicide Unit Detectives were notified and began investigating this incident as a homicide investigation. Crime Scene Search responded to the residence on Braden Drive where they recovered human remains believed to belong to the missing four-year-old. The victim's name is being withheld pending positive identification.  

As part of continued investigation, detectives interviewed several people that voluntarily came to the Law Enforcement Headquarters throughout the day, including the mother of the juvenile, Malikah Diane Bennett, DOB: 04/11/1990. At the conclusion of the interview, detectives identified Bennett as the suspect in this case. Bennett was arrested and transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's office and charged with Felony Child Abuse, Inflicting Physical Injury, Felony Concealing a Death, and 1st Degree Murder.

The investigation and arrest of Bennett was a collaborative effort by detectives with CMPD's Homicide Unit, Missing Persons Unit, Crimes Against Children, and Crime Scene Search.
