Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the Central Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, October 25, 2021) - Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged Hamza Malik Bratton, DOB: 11/14/1991, for the murder of Corey White.

As a result of continued investigation, homicide detectives identified Bratton as a suspect in this case, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.  On October 25, 2021,  detectives with the CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) worked in conjunction with the United States Secret Service to locate and arrest Bratton without incident.  Following an interview with detectives, Bratton was transferred to the custody of Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with Murder.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, October 24, 2021) - Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 300 block of West Carson Boulevard in the Central Division.

On Sunday, October 24, 2021, at approximately 2:17 a.m., Central Division officers were dispatched to the 300 block of West Carson Boulevard to assist Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department off-duty officers who heard a shot fired and located an adult male with a gunshot wound. Medic also responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital.

On Sunday, October 24, 2021, at 6:01 a.m., the victim, Corey White, DOB: 09/29/1980, succumbed to his injuries sustained in the assault and was pronounced deceased by hospital staff. His family has been notified of his death.

Homicide was notified, responded to the hospital and took over the case from Central Division detectives who started the initial investigation.  Preliminary information and evidence gathered during the investigation indicate that the victim was involved in an altercation in the parking lot right before he was shot.

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service initially to process the scene and then to the hospital to collect additional evidence. Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team responded as well.

This is an ongoing, active investigation. As further information develops, it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.
