Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, January 3, 2023) – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Detectives are investigating a discharge of a firearm in the presence of officers at the 8700 block of University Executive Park Drive in the University City Division.
On Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at approximately 6:33 a.m., University City Division officers and a supervisor responded to the 8700 block of University Executive Park Dr in reference to a subject experiencing a mental health crisis. Officers responded with Medic and attempted to de-escalate the situation. Based on observations made by Medic and Officers on scene, it was determined that the subject required immediate medical attention. When officers attempted to detain the subject, a struggle ensued. During the struggle, the subject produced a handgun and fired a single gunshot striking himself in the leg. Officers then utilized a less lethal Taser to assist in placing the subject into custody. Officers and Medic immediately began to administer medical care. During the encounter, no officers were injured or discharged their firearm. The subject's firearm was recovered at the scene.
The responding supervisor and one of the officers on scene are Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) certified. The subject was transported to a local hospital for a non-life-threatening injury.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office.
