***UPDATE*** Freedom Division - NCSHP Trooper involved in motorcycle crash on Tuckaseegee Road

Case Update: Wednesday, July 24, 2019

Major Crash Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have charged Dontay Kilgo, DOB: 04/06/1983, in connection with this case.

Information and evidence gathered during the course of the investigation led detectives in identifying Kilgo as the suspect in this case.  On July 24, 2019, officers with the North Tryon Crime Reduction Unit and the CMPD's TRAP Unit located Kilgo without incident and transported him to police headquarters where he was interviewed by Major Crash Detectives.  In addition, officers located the suspect vehicle.  After the interview was completed Kilgo was charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Law Enforcement Officer, Felony Flee to Elude, Reckless Driving, Failure to Heed to Blue Lights, Driving While License Revoked, and Possession of Marijuana.  At the conclusion of the interview, Kilgo will be transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect vehicle in this case has been identified as a late 1990s model Toyota Avalon driven by a black male who was wearing prescription glasses.

Through continued investigation into this collision, additional photographs of the vehicle of interest have been obtained, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigations Unit is requesting the public's continued assistance in this case.  Special attention can be drawn to the fact that the vehicle was last seen with a temporary, paper tag and is missing its hood.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigations Unit is conducting an investigation into a motor vehicle collision involving a North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NC SHP) Trooper and is requesting the public's assistance in the investigation.

On July 22, 2019, at 9:29 a.m., officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to reports of a motor vehicle collision near the intersection of Tuckaseegee Road and Edgewood Road, which is in the Freedom Division.  They arrived and located a NC SHP Trooper which had been involved in a collision.  The Trooper was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

The preliminary investigation indicates the NC SHP Motor Unit Trooper was attempting to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle when a collision occurred between the NC SHP Trooper and a second vehicle.  The first vehicle did not remain on scene.

The CMPD's Major Crash Investigations Unit is the primary investigating unit for the motor vehicle collision.  They are working to determine any witnesses to this incident as well as working with Crime Scene Search to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  The Aviation Unit and Real Time Crime Center are assisting with the investigation, and representative from the NC SHP, Charlotte Fire Department, MEDIC, and Operations Command also responded to the scene.

Through the course of the investigation, the vehicle pictured below has been determined to be a vehicle of interest.  It was last seen with a temporary, paper tag and is missing its hood.
