Tuesday, August 21, 2018,
On July 15, 2018, Perry Wayne Smith called 911 and requested to be transported to the hospital due to the injuries he sustained in a hit and run crash that occurred on July 14, 2018, at approximately 8:10 p.m. Mr. Smith told officers that he was riding his bicycle east in the 8000 block of Moores Chapel Road when he was struck on his left arm by the right side-view mirror of a black SUV. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department did receive a 911 call about the crash but was unable to locate anyone in the area who had been involved in this incident. Mr. Smith stated the handlebars struck him on the right side and mid part of his torso and knocked him to the ground. Mr. Smith stated the vehicle was a large black SUV, possibly a Chevrolet Tahoe, which did not stop to render aid or check on his condition. Mr. Smith stated the vehicle was last seen traveling east on Moores Chapel Road towards Freedom Drive. The SUV might have damage to the right side view mirror and could have a scrape on the right side from the handlebars.
No vehicle parts or other evidence was located or collected from the scene. Detectives are looking for any physical evidence related to this case
On August 20, 2018 at 10:35 a.m., Mr. Smith was pronounced deceased as a result of injuries he sustained in the crash.
This crash is being investigated by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Departments Major Crash Investigation Unit.
