Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigations Unit investigated the circumstances surrounding a fatal motor vehicle collision which occurred on August 17, 2019.
On August 17, 2019, at around 6:25 a.m., officers responded to reports of a motor vehicle collision near the intersection of Morris Field Drive and Wilkinson Boulevard, which is in the Freedom Division. When officers arrived, they located a Harley Davidson motorcycle and a Mecklenburg County MEDIC ambulance which had been involved in a collision. The alert and conscious driver of the motorcycle was transported to the hospital. The occupants of the ambulance, were uninjured. No patient was in the ambulance at the time of the collision.
The preliminary investigation indicates the ambulance was on Morris Field Drive and, while having a green, left-turn arrow for its direction of travel, began turning left onto Wilkinson Boulevard. A motorcycle travelling east on Wilkinson Boulevard failed to stop for the steady, red traffic light facing his direction and crossed paths with the ambulance, resulting in a collision. The driver succumbed to his injuries resulting from the collision on August 19, 2019.
