On Saturday, December 7th, 2019 at 9:48p.m., Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Freedom Division responded to a single vehicle crash located in the 4100 block of Wilkinson Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers located a 1996 Saturn SL1 that had run off the road to the right and struck a tree. MEDIC and CFD responded to assist. The driver, Celeste Leveaux Lytle, DOB: 3/19/1996, was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, Crimes Scene Search, and the Medical Examiner's Office responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates that the Saturn was traveling west on Wilkinson Boulevard at a high rate of speed. The Saturn was traveling too fast to negotiate a curve in the roadway and the vehicle's driver's side tires struck the concrete median. The vehicle then slid out of control and travelled off the right side of the road, striking both a utility pole and a tree.
Excessive speed is a contributing factor in this crash and impairment is suspected.
The victim's family has been notified of her death.
This is an ongoing, active investigation. As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs. Any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information concerning the crash, should contact Detective Oberer at (704) 432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
