Freedom Division - Fatality in the 3700 block of Sage Avenue

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, April 6, 2020) - On Monday, April 6, 2020, at 1:06 a.m., Freedom Division officers responded to a single-vehicle crash with injuries in the 3700 block of Sage Avenue.  Officers arrived to find a 2014 Honda Civic with a driver and two passengers that had struck a tree.  The Honda had extensive front-end damage, and the driver was trapped inside.  Medic and CFD responded to the scene, and the driver was pronounced deceased.  The front and rear passengers were transported to Atrium Health – CMC Main with serious injuries.  Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, officers from the DWI Task Force,  Motorcycle Unit, and Crime Scene responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.

The preliminary investigation revealed the Honda was traveling south on Carrier Drive at a high rate of speed.  The Honda entered a curve in the road to the right.  The Honda was traveling too fast to negotiate the curve and continued straight, leaving the roadway.  The Honda sideswiped a guardrail, drove through a chain-link fence, and continued straight until the front of the Honda struck a tree in the front yard of 3705 Sage Avenue.  Information and evidence gathered at the scene suggest another vehicle may have been involved, possibly an older dark-colored Audi.

This is an ongoing, active investigation. As further information develops, it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs. Any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information concerning the collision, should contact Detective Oberer at (704) 432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
