Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, March 8, 2020) – On Sunday, March 8, 2020 at approximately 3:33a.m., Freedom Division officers responded to a call for service regarding a crash involving two vehicles located at the 3300 block of Wilkinson Boulevard.  Upon their arrival, the officers located a 2014 Acura ILX and a 2007 Toyota Camry that had been involved in the crash.

MEDIC pronounced the driver of the Toyota, Nigel Brown, deceased at the scene.  The passenger of the Acura had remained in the vehicle, but the driver fled prior to the officer's arrival.  MEDIC transported Tyrek Boyd, the passenger in the Acura, to Atrium Heath's Carolinas Medical Center- Main. Members of CMPD's Major Crash Unit, DWI Task Force, Crime Scene Search and the Medical Examiner's Office responded to conduct the investigation.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the Acura was traveling east on Wilkinson Boulevard at a high rate of speed when it struck the Toyota which had been turning left onto Donald Ross Road from Wilkinson Boulevard.  The driver of Acura fled the scene, however, during the course of the investigation he was later identified as James Nelson Winston. It was determined that the 2014 Acura Winston had been operating was reported stolen in Charlotte on February 4, 2020 (see report # 20200204-0121-00). The investigation further determined that Winston was driving while impaired, his license was in a revoked status, and he had an open container of an alcoholic beverage in the vehicle. Excessive speed, recklessness and alcohol are contributing factors in this crash for Winston. Speed is not a factor for Nigel Brown and alcohol test results are pending.

James Nelson Winston was charged with DWI upon his arrival at Atrium-Main where he is being treated for his injuries. Arrest warrants for Winston have been issued for 2nd Degree Murder, Felony Death by Motor Vehicle, Felony Hit and Run, Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Reckless Driving, Driving While License Revoked, Possession of Marijuana, and for Open Container(Liquor). The warrants will be served upon Winston being released from the hospital. The passenger of the Acura, Tyrek Boyd, was charged with Possession of Alcohol by a Person Under 21.

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.  Any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information concerning the crash, should contact Detective Crum at (704) 432-2169 Ext# 4 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
