On Thursday, December 8, 2022, at approximately 5:20 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of South Tryon Street, Shopton Road West, and Youngblood Road in reference to a motor vehicle crash with injuries. Upon arrival, officers located a 2021 Harley Davidson motorcycle with front end damage and a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools bus with damage to the right side. The driver of the school bus was located on scene and was uninjured. The driver of the motorcycle was located lying on the roadway with life-threatening injuries. MEDIC arrived on scene and pronounced the driver of the motorcycle deceased at 5:27 a.m. due to injuries he sustained from the crash.
The CMPD's Major Crash Unit, Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search Unit responded to the scene to conduct an investigation.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the school bus was attempting to make a left turn from South Tryon Street onto Youngblood Road. As the school bus began the left turn, the motorcycle that was traveling north on South Tryon Street entered the intersection while a solid red light was illuminated in its direction of travel and struck the school bus. The school bus did not have any passengers when the crash occurred. The driver of the school bus, Natalie Aikens (DOB: 04/02/1979) was screened for impairment and found not to be impaired at the time of the crash. The driver of the motorcycle, Marvin Rushing Jr. (DOB: 09/16/1987) was not wearing a Department of Transportation-approved helmet at the time of the crash. Impairment for Marvin Rushing Jr. is not suspected. The family of Marvin Rushing Jr. has been notified of his death.
Excessive speed and failure to stop at a red light by the Harley Davidson motorcycle are believed to be the contributing factors for this crash.
