Fatal Vehicle Crash in the North Tryon Division

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in the North Tryon Division.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, January 11, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in the North Tryon Division. 


On Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at approximately 7:06 a.m., North Tryon Division officers responded to the 6300 block of The Plaza in reference to an Assault with a Deadly Weapon call for service.  Upon arrival, officers located a person of interest related to the call for service in the parking lot of the Shell Gas Station at 6308 The Plaza.  The person of interest has been identified as, Amanda Hopkins (DOB: 03/24/1987).


As officers began to approach Ms. Hopkins to speak with her, she began walking backward into the roadway.  Officers tried to coax Ms. Hopkins out of the roadway, however, Ms. Hopkins would not comply with officers requests and continued walking backward.  Officers asked her to get out of the roadway multiple times as they attempted to de-escalate the situation.  As Ms. Hopkins continued to walk backwards in the roadway, she was struck by a minivan traveling on The Plaza.  Officers immediately requested Medic to the scene, and upon their arrival, pronounced Ms. Hopkins deceased.


The officers present during this incident are Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) certified.


The driver of the minivan, Cesar Alexander Rodriguez Yanes (DOB: 12/25/1996), remained on scene following the crash and was interviewed by Major Crash Investigation Unit detectives.


The CMPD's Internal Affairs Office also responded to conduct their own investigation.


Ms. Hopkins' next of kin has been notified of her death.
