On Sunday, January 1st, 2023, at approximately 1:28 a.m., Hickory Grove Division officers responded to the 4600 block of Shamrock Drive in reference to a two-vehicle crash. Upon arrival, they located a 2019 Mazda CX-5 and a 2008 Chevrolet Suburban with heavy front-end damage sitting in the roadway. The driver of the Chevrolet, Fredis Omar Umanzor Vazquez (DOB: 03/05/1988), was transported to Atrium Main with minor injuries. The driver of the Mazda, Danny Lanier (DOB: 04/17/1953), was transported to Atrium Main also with minor injuries. The front seat passenger of the Mazda, Benita Lanier (DOB: 04/24/1955) was pronounced deceased on scene. All occupants of both vehicles were wearing their seatbelts.
Detectives with the CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit, officers with the DWI Task Force, CMPD's Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to investigate. The initial investigation indicates the Chevrolet Suburban that was operated by Mr. Vazquez was traveling south on N. Sharon Amity Road and struck the passenger side of the Mazda as it was making a left turn from N. Sharon Amity onto Shamrock Road. Mr. Lanier was screened for impairment and was found not to be impaired. Speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash for Mr. Lanier.
Mr. Vazquez was screened for impairment and was found to be impaired. Speed and impairment are both factors in the crash for Mr. Vazquez. After Mr. Vazquez was released from the hospital, he was transported to CMPD headquarters (601 E. Trade St.) for an interview. He was then transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. Mr. Vazquez was charged with Felony Death by Motor Vehicle, Possession of Open Container in a Motor Vehicle, and No Operator's License.
The victim's next of kin has been notified of the arrest.
