Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, January 23, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Freedom Division.
On Saturday, January 14, 2023, at approximately 7:20 a.m., Freedom Division officers responded to a motor vehicle collision with injuries in the 4400 block of Billy Graham Parkway. Upon arrival, officers located a 2006 Acura TL and a 2015 Mercedes Benz CLA 250 damaged in the roadway. Medic arrived on scene and transported the driver of the Acura to Atrium Health Main with life threatening injuries. The driver of the Mercedes Benz was transported to Novant Health Presbyterian with serious injuries.
The preliminary investigation indicates the driver of the Acura, Joseph Rogers (DOB: 01/11/1944), was traveling north on Billy Graham Parkway. Mr. Rogers failed to stop for a red light and struck the right front side of the Mercedes Benz, driven by, Marcellous Diane McIlwain (DOB: 01/05/1968), in the intersection of Billy Graham Parkway approaching Scott Futrell Drive.
Speed, nor impairment are suspected for either driver.
On Wednesday, January 18, 2023, Mr. Joseph Rogers passed away due to his injuries sustained in the crash.
Mr. Rogers' next of kin has been notified of his death.
