Fatal Vehicle Collision in the North Tryon Division

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a motor vehicle crash fatality.

On Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at 7:18 a.m., North Tryon Division officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries in the 4900 block of North Tryon Street.  Upon arrival, officers located a gray 1980 Chevrolet pickup truck and a black 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz pickup truck and the injured drivers of those two vehicles.  Medic responded and transported both drivers to Novant Main.  On November 2, 2022, the driver of the Chevrolet succumbed to his injuries sustained in the crash and was pronounced deceased.  The Major Crash Investigation Unit was made aware of the crash and death on November 3, 2022.

 

The initial investigation revealed that William Victor Smith (DOB 03/16/1940) was the driver of the Chevrolet.  He was pulling onto North Tryon Street from Bennett Street traveling east.  David William Canter-McMillan (DOB 07/06/1974) was the driver of the Hyundai.  He was traveling south on North Tryon St.  The Chevrolet pulled in front of the Hyundai, and the front of the Hyundai struck the left front of the Chevrolet.  The Chevrolet then went off the road to the right and struck a utility pole.  Speed and impairment were not suspected for either driver, however, the investigation is ongoing. Next of kin has been notified of Mr. Smith's death.
