Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, December 13, 2022) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian in the Providence Division.

On Sunday, December 11, 2022, shortly after 8:00 p.m., Providence Division officers responded to the 3700 block of East Independence Boulevard in reference to a pedestrian being struck by a motor vehicle. Upon officers' arrival, they located a pedestrian lying in the roadway.  Further down the road, officers located a 2005 Toyota Avalon with front end damage.

The Charlotte Fire Department and Medic responded to the scene.  Medic transported the pedestrian, Reginald Tutt (DOB: 11/29/1979), to Atrium Health Main with life-threatening injuries. Mr. Tutt was pronounced deceased at the hospital.  The driver of the Toyota Avalon, Constance Carver (DOB: 08/30/1956), was transported by Medic to Presbyterian Main with non-life-threatening injuries.

CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit along with the DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search responded to conduct the investigation. The initial investigation indicates that Mr. Tutt was crossing E. Independence Blvd. in a section of the road that is not meant for pedestrians to cross. He was wearing dark clothing and did not have any reflectors. Mr. Tutt walked into the path of the Toyota Avalon, which was traveling east on E. Independence Blvd, and was struck by the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle was screened and found not to be impaired.  Speed is also not a factor in this crash.

A toxicology report is pending for Mr. Tutt.
