Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, January 23, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motorcycle versus vehicle crash in the Providence Division.
On Friday, January 20th, 2023, at approximately 8:36 p.m., Providence Division officers responded to the 4800 block of Sharon Road in reference to a motorcycle versus vehicle crash. Upon arrival, they located the operator of the motorcycle lying in the roadway unresponsive beside his 2020 Suzuki GSXR 750 motorcycle. Also on scene was a 2022 Subaru Ascent being operated by Jeffrey Bierer. Charlotte Fire and Medic responded and pronounced the operator of the motorcycle, Anthony Maerten (DOB: 01/05/1988), deceased on scene from the injuries that were sustained in this crash.
Detectives with the CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit, officers with the DWI Task Force and Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. The initial investigation indicates that the Subaru was in the left lane attempting to make a left turn on to Sharon View Road. At the same time, the Suzuki motorcycle was coming the opposite direction on Sharon Road. As the Subaru was turning left, the motorcycle attempted to brake, going on to its side and sliding into the passenger side door of the Subaru. Airbags did not deploy for the Subaru. Mr. Maerten was wearing a DOT approved helmet and had a valid motorcycle endorsement.
It is unknown if impairment is a factor for Mr. Maerten but toxicology results are pending. It is also unknown at this time if speed is a factor for Mr. Maerten. Impairment nor speed were factors for Mr. Bierer. Mr. Maerten's next of kin has been notified of his death.
