Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, February 13, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the South Division.

On Friday, February 10, 2023, at approximately 12:28 p.m., South Division officers responded to the 12100 block of Providence Road West in reference to a three-vehicle crash.  Upon arrival, officers located a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, a 2012 Ford Econoline van with heavy front-end damage sitting in the roadway, and a 2009 Hyundai Genesis with front end damage. The Charlotte Fire and Medic also responded to the scene.  The driver of the Jeep, Mitchell Virgulti (DOB: 06/11/1990), and the driver of the Ford were pronounced deceased on scene. Medic transported the driver and front passenger of the Hyundai to an area hospital.

Detectives with the CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit, officers with CMPD's Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to investigate in conjunction with the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office. The preliminary investigation indicates that the Jeep was traveling west on Providence Road West, crossed the center line and struck the Ford Econoline van head-on. The Hyundai then struck the rear of the van. The driver of the Ford was wearing a seatbelt, but the driver of the Jeep was not.

Speed and impairment appear to be factors for the driver of the Jeep.  It is unknown if speed or impairment is a factor for the driver of the Ford. Toxicology results are pending for both drivers.

Impairment and speed do not appear to be factors for the driver of the Hyundai.

Mr. Virgulti's next of kin has been notified of his death, however, next of kin notification has yet to be made for the driver of the Ford van.
