Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, December 2, 2022) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the North Division.
On Friday, December 2, 2022, at 11:23 a.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injury in the 6800 block of Statesville Road in North Division. When officers arrived, they located a moped with damage and the driver, Bobby Collins (DOB: 08/29/1971) lying off the right side of the roadway with injuries. Upon MEDIC's arrival the driver was pronounced deceased at 11:33 a.m. due to injuries he sustained from the crash.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to investigate. The initial investigation revealed that Collins was operating a moped and heading North on Statesville Road when he began to veer off the right side of the roadway. The moped continued off the roadway and struck a tree.
Collins was wearing a Department of Transportation approved helmet at the time of the crash. Excessive speed or impairment does not appear to be a contributing factor for this crash, however toxicology results are pending.
The family of Mr. Collins has been notified of his death.
