1/9/2022

Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, January 9, 2022) - Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the 2300 block of Old Steele Creek Road.

On Sunday, January 9, 2022 at 12:49pm Westover Division officers responded to a single-vehicle crash with injuries in the 2300 block of Old Steele Creek Road.  Officers arrived to find a heavily damaged 2009 Hyundai Genesis sedan that had run off the road to the right, striking a utility pole and several trees.  The driver was the only occupant in the vehicle.  The Charlotte Fire Department responded and declared the driver deceased from the injuries sustained in the collision.  The CMPD Major Crash Reconstruction Unit, Crime Scene Search, and officers from the DWI Task Force responded to conduct the investigation.

The initial investigation revealed the Hyundai, driven by Curtis Petty, DOB 08/15/1950, was traveling southwest on Old Steele Creek Road at a high rate of speed.  The Hyundai was traveling too fast to negotiate a curve in the road to the left.  The vehicle ran off the road to the right onto the grass shoulder, sideswiped a utility pole and then struck several trees before coming to rest.  Mr. Petty was unrestrained and suffered fatal injuries.

Excessive speed appears to be a contributing factor in this crash.  It is unknown if Mr. Petty was impaired, but toxicology results are pending.  There were no other vehicles involved.

Next of kin has been notified.

The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD's Public Affairs Office. Anyone who witnessed or has information about the crash should contact Detective Oberer at 704-432-2169, extension 3.
