Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision in the South Division--Aug 28, 2021

Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, August 29, 2021) – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the South Division.

 

On Saturday, August 28, 2021, at approximately 4:12 p.m., South Division officers responded to a two-vehicle crash at the 11000 block of Johnston Rd. Upon arrival, officers located a silver 2010 Toyota Yaris and a silver 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer with heavy front-end damage. The driver of the Toyota was identified as Gustavo Leobardo Lopez-Cuarez, DOB: 02/14/1983. The driver of the Chevrolet was identified as Ryan Thomas Minch, DOB: 05/11/1975.  Lopez-Cuarez was pronounced deceased on scene by medic. Lopez-Cuarez's family has been notified of his death.  

 

The Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, Motor Unit, Medical Examiner's Office, and Crime Scene Search responded to investigate.

 

The initial investigation has revealed that the Chevrolet was traveling North in the northbound direction of travel of Johnston Road at a high rate of speed. Minch lost control of the Chevrolet and the vehicle went over the median. After going over the median the vehicle was traveling North in the southbound lanes of Johnston Rd. at which point the Chevrolet collided with the Toyota head-on. The final resting place of the Chevrolet was the lane closest to the median facing South. The Toyota final resting place was on the sidewalk of the southbound side of Johnston Rd.

 

 

It was determined by officers that Minch was impaired at the time of the crash. After the collision, Minch was treated and released from hospital. Minch was then transported to the Law Enforcement Center Headquarters where he was interviewed by detectives. At the conclusion of the interview, Minch was transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with Felony Death by Vehicle, DWI, Reckless Driving, and Open Container of Alcoholic Beverage.

 

 

The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing.  As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD's Public Affairs Office.
