On Monday, June 7, 2021, at approximately 1:59 a.m., officers with the North Tryon Division responded to a single-vehicle crash near the 4900 block of North Tryon Street. Upon their arrival, they located a black 2007 Cadillac Escalade with extensive damage in the roadway. Medic and CFD responded and began to render aid to the two occupants of the vehicle.  Vega, who was identified as the driver, was transported to Atrium Health Main with minor injuries.   The passenger of the vehicle was pronounced deceased on the scene by Medic.  He has been identified as Ricardo Ramirez Gonzalez, DOB: 10/22/1997. His family has been notified of his death.

The initial investigation indicates that the Cadillac was traveling at a high rate of speed on N. Tryon Street towards E. Sugar Creek Rd. Vega was screened for impairment and determined to be impaired by alcohol. At that time, he was charged with DWI. After Vega was released from the hospital, he was transported to the Law Enforcement Center to be interview by detectives. At the conclusion of the interview, Vega was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and additionally charged with Felony Death by Vehicle, Reckless Driving, and Driving While License Revoked.
