Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, August 29, 2021) – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the North Division.
On Sunday, August 29, 2021, at approximately 2:15 a.m., North Division officers responded to a two-vehicle crash on I-77 near mile marker 13. Upon arrival, officers located a 2008 Chrysler 300 and a 2017 Dodge Charger in the roadway. Medic arrived on scene and pronounced the operator of the Dodge Charger, Lamac De Arthur Nelson, DOB: 02/05/1989, deceased on scene. His family has been notified of his death.
The Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to investigate. The initial investigation has revealed that Dodge was traveling north on I-77 in the right lane in a careless and reckless manner and at a high rate of speed when it struck the Chrysler in the trunk/rear bumper area. The Chrysler was traveling north also in the right lane of travel. After the Dodge struck the Chrysler, it traveled to the right of the white fog line and struck a concrete retaining barrier on the I-85 overpass bridge. The Dodge continued to travel along the barrier for approximately 800 feet. The Chrysler, after the strike, rotated counterclockwise 360 degrees and came to a final resting position in the center lane without striking additional objects.
Speed and impairment are not contributing factors for the occupants of the Chrysler. Speed and impairment are suspected factors for Nelson with a toxicology test pending.
