Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision in the Hickory Grove Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, June 15, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are conducting an investigation into a fatal motor vehicle collision which occurred near the 7700 block of East W T Harris Boulevard in the Hickory Grove Division.

Shortly before 9:00 p.m. on June 14, 2021, officers responded to reports of a motor vehicle collision on East W T Harris Boulevard at Delta Crossing Lane.  When officers arrived, they located a 2004 Suzuki GSXR 750 and a 2016 Kia Forte with damage to the rear of the vehicle. The driver of the motorcycle, Shaquon Thompson, DOB: 10/04/1989, was pronounced deceased on scene from the injuries that he had sustained in this crash. His family has been notified of his death. The operator of the Kia Forte and his passengers were uninjured and remained on scene.

The CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, CMPD Motor Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.  Their preliminary investigation indicates the Suzuki was traveling at a high rate of speed, and as Mr. Thompson was approaching Delta Crossing Lane, the Kia Forte pulled out in front of him. The Suzuki and Mr. Thompson struck the Kia Forte and became separated. Speed is a contributing factor for the motorcycle.  Although speed was not a contributing factor for the driver of the Kia, Moo Paw, DOB: 10/08/2001, he was interviewed and screened for impairment and found to have consumed an impairing substance.  Paw was charged with DWI, window tint violation, no operator's license, possession of marijuana over a half ounce and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing.  As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD's Public Affairs Office.
