Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, August 29, 2021) – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Hickory Grove Division.
On Saturday, August 28, 2021, at approximately 10:22 p.m., Hickory Grove Division officers responded to a two-vehicle crash at the 10000 block of Harrisburg Rd. Upon arrival, officers located a 2015 Ford Fusion and a 1999 Toyota 4Runner, both with severe damage. Officers located the driver of the Ford with minor injury. The driver of the Toyota, Gelacio Torres Loredo, DOB: 01/29/1993, was located away from the Toyota after being ejected. Loredo was transported to Atrium Health Main and pronounced deceased a short time later. His family has been notified of his death.
The Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to investigate. The initial investigation has revealed that the Loredo was traveling northeast on Harrisburg Rd at a high rate of speed. When the Loredo arrived at the intersection of Camp Stewart, he entered the intersection while a steady red light was displayed and struck the Ford. At the time of the crash the Ford was executing a left turn from Camp Stewart with a green light. After striking the Ford, the Toyota began to flip side over side off the roadway to the right and through a brush line. During the flip, Loredo was ejected out of the Toyota due to no seatbelt use. The Ford remained at the area of impact and the driver was able to be interviewed at Novant.
Speed and impairment are suspected contributing factors for Loredo with toxicology results pending. Speed and impairment are not contributing factors for the driver of the Ford.
