Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision in the Freedom Division--August 4, 2021

Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, August 4, 2021) – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Freedom Division.

On Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at approximately 1:10 p.m., Freedom Division officers responded to a two-vehicle crash in the 12900 block of Moores Chapel Road. Upon arrival, officers located a 2006 Mack dump truck with severe damage in the roadway, and the driver, identified as Donald G. Burnette, DOB: 01/19/1955 who had been ejected. Officers also located a 2017 Kenilworth dump truck down an embankment, and the driver, identified as Darius Lashawn Sweezy, DOB: 03/23/1995 with serious injuries outside of the truck. Medic responded to the scene in which they pronounced both drivers deceased on scene.

The Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to investigate. The initial investigation has revealed that Burnette was traveling north on Moores Chapel Road and ran off the road to the right. He overcorrected and crossed the centerline to his left, and began sliding sideways. Sweezy was driving the Kenilworth truck and traveling south on Moores Chapel Road when he drove off the road slightly to his right in an attempt to avoid a collision but was struck by the Mack truck. The impact of the crash between the empty Mack truck and the fully loaded Kenilworth truck spun the Mack, ejected Burnette, and caused the engine and transmission to separate from the vehicle. It caused the Kenilworth truck to continue off the road to the right and down an embankment where it caught on fire.

Failure to maintain the lane by Burnette appears to be the primary contributing factor in the crash. Impairment is not suspected for either driver, but test results are pending. There was one known witness to the crash. Next of kin has been notified for both decedents.

The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD’s Public Affairs Office.
