Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision in the Freedom Division - June 29, 2021

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, June 29, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are conducting an investigation into a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Charlie Hipp Road near Moores Chapel Road in the Freedom Division.

Shortly before 9:40 p.m. on June 28, 2021, officers responded to reports of a motor vehicle collision near the 4400 block of Charlie Hipp Road. When they arrived, officers located an overturned, 2005 Dodge Dakota off the side of the roadway.  The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, Antwoin Richard Boon, DOB: 07/11/1984, was pronounced deceased on scene.  His family has been notified of his death.

The CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.  Their preliminary investigation indicates the dodge was travelling west on Charlie Hipp Road when its driver ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a large rock.  This caused the Dodge to flip several times and resulted in its driver being partially ejected from the vehicle. Excessive speed is a contributing factor to this collision, and alcohol use is suspected as an additional contributing factor. No other vehicles were involved in this crash.

The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD's Public Affairs Office. Anyone who witnessed or has information about the crash should contact Detective Mercedes at 704-432-2169, extension 5. The public can also leave information anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/. The report number for this case is 20210628-2138-01.
