Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision in the Eastway Division


Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, September 6, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal collision that occurred in the 100 block of Parkwood Avenue.

On Sunday, September 5, 2021, officers responded to a head-on collision in the 100 block of Parkwood Avenue.  Upon arrival, officers found a 2004 Mazda RX-8 and a 2017 Toyota Camry in the road with extensive front-end damage. The driver of the Mazda, Damon Jermaine Blackwell, DOB: 06/01/1977, was pronounced deceased on the scene by Medic from the injuries he sustained in the collision.  His family has been notified of his death. The driver of the Toyota, Sidi Mahamed Amar Vi, was transported to Atrium Health - CMC Main with minor injuries. 

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force officers, and Crime Scene were called to the scene to conduct the investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed the Mazda was traveling north on Parkwood Avenue at a high rate of speed and entered a curve in the road to the right.  The Mazda traveled too fast to negotiate the curve and crossed the double yellow lane divider into the opposing lanes.  The Mazda struck the Toyota head-on, which was traveling south on Parkwood Avenue. 

Blackwell was not wearing a seat belt.  Impairment is suspected for Blackwell, but toxicology results are pending. 

Amar Vi was interviewed and screened for impairment at the hospital.  No impairment was suspected and he was wearing his provided seat belt.

The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing.  As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD's Public Affairs Office.
