Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision in the Freedom Division


Charlotte, N.C. (Sunday, October 24, 2021) - Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the 3700 block of Queen City Drive of the Freedom Division.

On Sunday, October 24, 2021, at approximately 12:29 a.m., officers responded to a report of a pedestrian struck in the 3700 block of Queen City Drive. Members of the Charlotte Fire Department and Medic also responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers located a pedestrian in the roadway with severe injuries near a 2004 Volvo V70 with minor damage. The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene. The pedestrian, identified as Cody Killian, DOB: 07/07/1994, was pronounced deceased on the scene by Medic due to the injuries he sustained from the crash. His family has been notified of his death. 

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, officers with the Motor Unit, DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to investigate. The preliminary investigation revealed that the Volvo, driven by Melissa Jett, DOB: 09/01/1982, was traveling north on Queen City Drive when she observed a pedestrian lying in her travel lane. Ms. Jett attempted to avoid the pedestrian in the road but was unable to and struck the pedestrian. Impairment does not appear to be a contributing factor for the driver.   

Impairment is suspected to be a contributing factor for the victim, with toxicology test results pending.
