Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision in the Eastway Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, October 23, 2021) - Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are conducting an investigation into a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the 2700 block of Eastway Drive.

On Saturday, October 23, 2021, at approximately 4:53 a.m., Eastway Division officers responded to the 2700 block of Eastway Drive in reference to a motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival, officers located a 2003 Honda Accord with front-end damage and a 2016 Nissan Versa with heavy front-end damage. The driver of the Honda, Etta Gorham Rhem, DOB: 03/04/1963, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported my medic to Atrium Health Main.  The driver of the Nissan, Shi-kerra Nicole Michelle Pickett, DOB: 10/22/1988, was pronounced deceased on scene by MEDIC.  Ms. Pickett's family has been notified of her death.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, officers with the Motor Unit, DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to investigate. The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the Nissan was traveling north on Eastway Drive and drove out of her lane to the left into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with the Honda, which was traveling south on Eastway Drive. The Driver of the Honda was wearing her seatbelt. Speed and impairment do not seem to be contributing factors for Ms. Rhem.  

The victim, Ms. Pickett, was not wearing her seatbelt, reckless driving and speed seem to be contributing factors in the crash; in addition, impairment is suspected, with toxicology test results pending. 

The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD's Public Affairs Office.
