Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision in the Steele Creek Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, October 19, 2021) - Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Steele Creek Division.

On Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at approximately 5:28 a.m., officers in the Steele Creek Division responded to the 14500 block of Carowinds Boulevard in reference to a motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival, officers located a 2015 Kia Soul with heavy front-end damage and a 2018 Audi Q7 with minor front-end damage. The driver of the Audi was uninjured and remained on the scene. The driver of the Kia Soul, identified as Eddy Wilbanks, DOB: 11/19/1939, was pronounced deceased on the scene. His family has been notified of his death.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to investigate.  Early evidence indicates Wilbanks was traveling on Choate Circle when he crossed over Carowinds Blvd onto Best Day Blvd and struck the front end of the Audi, which was stopped at the light.  The Kia continued on Best Day Blvd, where it ran off the road to the right and struck a tree and fence on property owned by Carowinds. The vehicle rotated and began to accelerate back in the direction towards Carowinds Blvd.  The Kia crossed the intersection back onto Choate Circle a second time.  The vehicle ran off the road and traveled down an embankment before colliding with a building. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors for Wilbanks but toxicology results are pending.

The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing.  As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD's Public Affairs Office.
