Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, November 24, 2021) - Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the 9700 block of N. Tryon Street.
On Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at approximately 9:13 p.m., University City Division officers responded to the 9700 block of N. Tryon Street in reference to a motor vehicle collision. Upon arrival, officers located a 2011 Audi Q5 SUV with heavy damage stopped in the northbound travel lanes. Nearby, officers also found a 2017 Volkswagen Golf GTi with heavy front-end damage in the tree line. The driver of the Volkswagen, Thomas Nix, DOB: 10/27/1995, was transported to Atrium Main by Medic with minor injuries. The driver of the Audi, Luke Drawdy, DOB: 12/26/1988, and his front-seat passenger Restin Drawdy, DOB:08/15/1986, were both pronounced deceased on scene. Their families have been notified of their deaths.
CMPD's Major Crash Unit has been assigned to investigate this crash. Preliminary evidence indicates that the Audi was attempting to turn left onto N. Tryon Street from a side entrance/exit of the Terraces at University Place Shopping Center. At the same time, the Volkswagen was in the left lane traveling south on N. Tryon Street. As the Audi attempted to turn left, it was struck by the Volkswagen on the driver's side.
Speed is a factor for the Volkswagen, but not a factor for the Audi. Both deceased occupants were wearing their seatbelts. Nix was screened for impairment and was found to be impaired. It is unknown if impairment is a factor for the driver of the Audi, but toxicology results are pending.
Nix has been charged with Driving While Impaired, and additional warrants have been obtained for two counts of Felony Death by Motor Vehicle and Reckless Driving.
