Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, August 2, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal hit and run collision involving a pedestrian that occurred in the 4000 block of Brookshire Boulevard.
On Saturday July 31, 2021 at approximately 2:58 a.m., Officers responded to a hit and run involving a vehicle and pedestrian in the 4000 block of Brookshire Boulevard, in the Freedom Division. Upon arrival, officers located a pedestrian in the roadway. The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC responded to the scene as well as medic, where they pronounced the pedestrian deceased on scene. The pedestrian has been identified as Barry Cunningham, DOB: 01/05/1986. His family has been notified of his death.
The CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct the investigation and collect physical evidence. The initial investigation indicates a 2015-2021 Dodge Charger was traveling northwest on Brookshire Boulevard at a high rate of speed in the right lane when it struck the pedestrian who was crossing the road. The pedestrian was struck and flown across three travel lanes when he came to rest next to the median. The driver of the Dodge Charger failed to stop at the scene or notify emergency services.
Detectives are actively searching for a 2015-2021 grey/ silver or red Dodge Charger with damage to the front of the vehicle, headlamp, and windshield. The vehicle is also missing the front Dodge emblem.
