Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, March 6, 2023) - Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the South Division.
On Friday, March, 3, 2023 at approximately 5:14 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Pineville-Matthews Road and Echo Forest Drive in reference to a motor vehicle collision with injuries. Upon arrival, officers located a KTM 890 Duke motorcycle with front-end damage and a Jeep Cherokee with damage to the front right side. The Charlotte Fire Department and Medic also responded to the scene. Medic pronounced the driver of the motorcycle deceased on scene due to the injuries he sustained during the crash.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates that the motorcyclist, Darren Lee Marshall, Jr. (DOB: 04/04/1992), was traveling northeast on Pineville-Matthews Road when the Jeep Cherokee, driven by, Roy James Jackson (DOB: 12/10/1951) crossed into the path of the motorcycle. The motorcycle struck the front right side of the Jeep. Mr. Marshall was thrown from the motorcycle and landed in the roadway. Mr. Marshall was wearing a North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) approved helmet at the time of the crash and had a motorcycle endorsement.
While on scene, Mr. Jackson showed signs of impairment and was evaluated by a DWI Task Force officer. He was ruled to be impaired. Mr. Jackson was placed under arrest for Felony Death by Motor Vehicle. Failure to yield to right of way was also a contributing factor for this crash. Mr. Jackson was transported to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) in Uptown to be interviewed by detectives. Upon conclusion of the interview, he was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
Mr. Marshall's next of kin has been notified of his death.
