Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, July 14, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Freedom Division.
On Friday, July 9, at approximately 10:12 p.m., officers responded to the 8400 block of Mount Holly Road in reference to a personal injury crash involving two vehicles. Upon arrival, officers located a gray 2007 Mercury Marquis and a gray 2014 Toyota Camry in the roadway. One occupant in the Mercury was transported to Atrium Health – Main with life-threatening injuries, while two other occupants were transported with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Camry was also transported with minor injuries.
The DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search responded to assist in the investigation and collect physical evidence. The initial investigation revealed that the Mercury was traveling east on Mount Holly Road near the intersection with Atkinson Drive when it suddenly swerved left sideways across the center line in front of the Toyota Camry, which was traveling west on Mount Holly Road. The Toyota was unable to stop, and its front end struck the right side of the Mercury. At least one motorist traveling behind the Toyota observed the crash and called 9-1-1.
On Tuesday, July 13, at 5:05 p.m., one of the passengers of the Mercury succumbed to her injuries sustained in the crash and was pronounced deceased. The victim has been identified as Karla Bariela Guerrero-Morales, DOB: 10/21/2001. Her family has been notified of her death.
Impairment is not suspected to be a factor for either driver. The proximate cause of the crash indicates that the Mercury failed to maintain its lane and crossed into oncoming traffic. At this time, it is unknown if a mechanical failure caused this.
