Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, June 19, 2021) – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit is investigating a traffic fatality that occurred in the 4300 block of Whitewater Center Parkway.
On Friday, June 18, at approximately 7:44 p.m., Freedom Division officers responded to the 4300 block of Whitewater Center Parkway in reference to reports of a motor vehicle that had struck a tree. Upon arrival, officers located a gray 2014 Honda Accord sedan in the median beside a tree that had been struck. The driver of the Honda, identified as Matthew James Hughes, DOB: 7/24/1989, was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic from the injuries that he had sustained in this crash. His family has been notified of his death. Medic also transported a juvenile passenger to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Search responded to conduct the investigation and collect physical evidence. The initial investigation has revealed that the Honda Accord was traveling north on Whitewater Center Parkway towards Belmeade Drive. As the Honda exited a curve there, it lost control and slid sideways onto a median to its left. It then struck several small boulders and a tree in the median. Several motorists arrived shortly after the crash and called 9-1-1.
Excessive Speed appears to be a factor in the crash. Alcohol impairment is also suspected, and test results are pending. There are no known witnesses to the crash.
The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD's Public Affairs Office.
