Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged Winifred Mirambeau, DOB: 11/23/1994, for her involvement in this case.
On Monday, August 27, 2018, at 12:57 p.m., Eastway Division officers responded to the 2300 block of Shamrock Drive in reference to a missing person call for service. The victim told responding officers that she left her infant baby with family members while she ran errands. During this time the family members discovered that Winifred Mirambeau, the girlfriend of one of the family members, had taken the baby and left the home.
At approximately 1:00 p.m., Iredell County deputies encountered Mirambeau holding the baby and a Jeep that was occupied by a male on I-77. Iredell County deputies notified and requested CMPD Homicide Detectives.
During the investigation, detectives determined that Mirambeau took the baby from the residence and flagged down the Jeep that was being driven by the male. The male began to drive off and a short distance later Mirambeau motioned for him to stop and she got into the driver's seat. The male stated that Mirambeau got onto I-77 and drove to Mooresville, NC at which time Mirambeau got out of the vehicle on the interstate with the baby. The male advised he called 911. Iredell County deputies arrived on scene and made contact with Mirambeau, the baby and the male. The baby was not injured and was reunited with her mother. The male was interviewed on scene by detectives and it was determined that he was not involved in the kidnapping. Mirambeau was voluntarily transported to police headquarters where she was interviewed.
At the conclusion of the interview, Mirambeau was charged with 1st degree Kidnapping and Child Abduction and transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
This is an ongoing investigation. As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.
