The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit is investigating a crash that occurred near the 900 block of Eastway Drive. On Thursday, September 19th, 2019 at 2:22 p.m., North Tryon Division and Eastway Division officers responded to a call for service regarding a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at the intersections of Eastway Drive and E. Sugar Creek Rd. Upon arrival, officers located a pedestrian lying in the roadway with visible injuries due to being struck by a car. Detectives with the Major Crash Investigations Unit, officers with the DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Search responded to conduct the investigation. Ops Command, CDCP, and CMS Staff also responded to the incident.
The initial investigation revealed a 16-year-old Garringer High School Student was crossing the road in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a 2015 Acura that was driving in a posted 25mph School Zone. Witnesses stated that the driver of the Acura had the green light for his direction of travel, and the victim, though in a marked crosswalk, did not have the right of way. As the victim was crossing the roadway, he was struck by the Acura as he neared the center median. The victim was then thrown into the intersection as a result of the impact, sustaining life-threatening injuries. The driver remained on scene.
Medic responded and transported the victim to Atrium Health' Carolina Main Center, where he is in critical condition.
The driver was screened for impairment, and impairment is not a suspected factor in the collision for the pedestrian.
There is no initial evidence of excessive speed contributing to the collision. However, the incident remains under active investigation.
The pedestrian's identity will be released once his family has been notified.
