Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, May 20, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Central Division have charged 43-year-old Cecil Orelefant Oxner for the recent shooting at the Babylon Hookah Lounge and are continuing to request any information the public may have about the incident.
On May 19, 2021, Cecil Orelefant Oxner, DOB: 03/01/1978, was interviewed by detectives about his involvement in this case. Detectives determined Oxner was the driver of one of the vehicles involved in this shooting, so Oxner has since been charged with attempted first-degree murder and transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
Central Division detectives are continuing their investigation to identify additional suspects and are asking anyone with information about this case to provide it by calling 911. Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, May 18, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Central Division are requesting any information the public may have concerning a shooting involving several rifles and pistols.
Shortly after 2:20 a.m. on May 17, 2021, officers responded to reports of a shooting at the Babylon Hookah Lounge located at 520 College Street. Officers arrived and located an adult male with an apparent, life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was transported to the hospital by MEDIC. Officers determined the suspects had fled the scene in a vehicle, so notice was sent out to units across the city to look for a Nissan NV200. Officers located more than 55 rifle and pistol shell casings and discovered four vehicles and one structure had been struck by the gunfire. Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence while detectives conducted the investigation.
During their investigation, officers located the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver refused to stop, and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The pursuit ended near the 1800 block of Pegram Street where all occupants fled from the vehicle on foot. CMPD's Canine Unit responded to assist with locating the suspects, leading to the detention of five subjects. Two of these subjects, Damajae Williams, 10/30/2002, and Mudullahi Mohamed, DOB: 12/18/2001, were arrested for warrants unrelated to this incident. Williams had an outstanding arrest warrant for shooting into occupied property, and Mudullahi had an outstanding arrest warrant for possession of stolen property. No one has been charged for the shooting at Babylon Hookah Lounge; however, the investigation is ongoing.
A search of the Nissan NV200 resulted in the seizure of an AK-47 and a 9mm pistol with an extended magazine. Surveillance video from a nearby business captured the incident, and detectives are releasing this video to the public for any information they may have about the incident.
