Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, January 31, 2023) – As a result of the continued investigation, it has been determined that Mr. Freddy Kasongo was misidentified as the deceased pedestrian in this fatal crash investigation. On Tuesday, January 31, 2023, upon receiving results from forensics reviewed by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Crime Lab, the Major Crash Investigation Unit identified the pedestrian in this case as Kennath Dennis (DOB: 05/12/1983). The victim's next of kin has been notified of his death.

Fatal Pedestrian Crash Investigation in the University City Division
Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, January 30, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian in the University City Division.
On Sunday, January 29, 2023, at approximately 1:56 a.m., officers responded to the 2400 block of West W. T. Harris Boulevard in reference to a motor vehicle crash call for service involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers located a 2012 Ford F-450 tow truck and a pedestrian. Medic arrived on scene and pronounced the pedestrian deceased. The driver of the truck, Marcus Stewart (DOB: 5/12/1983), did not sustain any injuries and remained on scene.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. The preliminary investigation revealed that the pedestrian was crossing the travel lanes on West W T Harris Boulevard, when he was struck. The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk or near an intersection. And, lighting conditions in the crash location were dark and the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing. The pedestrian victim has been identified as Freddy Kasongo (DOB: 03/25/1975). Mr. Kasongo's family has been notified of his death.
The driver of the truck was screened for impairment and was found not to be impaired at the time of the crash. Impairment for the pedestrian is unknown at this time.
