On Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at 12:30 a.m., Central Division officers responded to the 100 block of E. Morehead Street in reference to a two motor vehicle crash call for service. Upon arrival, officers located a 2015 Honda SUV and a Lime Bike bicycle that had all been involved in a crash. Matthew Nicholas Hoffman, the operator of the bicycle, sustained life threatening injuries and was transported to Carolina's Medical Center by Medic. Freweini Abraham Araya, the operator of the Honda, remained on scene and did not sustain injury.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the bicyclist, Matthew Hoffman, was traveling southeast on E. Morehead Street and began making a right turn into a public vehicular area at 108 E. Morehead Street. The Honda SUV, operated by Freweini Araya, was also traveling southeast on E. Morehead Street directly behind the bicyclist. As the bicyclist was making the right turn, he abruptly turned back left into the roadway and into the path of the Honda. The Honda subsequently struck the bicycle and then struck the building structure at 108 E. Morehead Street. Speed and alcohol/drug use are not contributing factors for the operator of the Honda SUV. Alcohol use is a suspected contributing factor for the victim. The victim was not wearing a helmet while operating the bicycle. On Sunday, November 25, 2018 at 6:15 p.m., the victim was pronounced deceased as a result from injuries sustained in this crash.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Crum with the Major Crash Investigations Unit at 704-432-2169.
