On Thursday, December 27th, 2018 at 6:15 a.m., Central Division officers responded to a single vehicle injury crash in the 400 block of West Morehead Street in front of the Panther's Stadium. Medic and the Charlotte Fire Department also responded to the crash. The driver was pronounced deceased on scene. Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, Crime Scene Investigators, and officers from the DWI Task Force were called to the scene to conduct the investigation.
The initial investigation has revealed that a 2007 Buick Lucerne was traveling northwest on West Morehead Street. The Buick, driven by Demtrice Antwan Gibson, was traveling above the posted speed limit and the driver lost control. The Buick began to skid and slid off the road to the right. The front bumper of the Buick grazed one tree, then continued off the roadway and struck a second tree on the driver's side. Gibson was trapped in the crushed vehicle and was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic. His family has been notified of his death.
The crash is under investigation by the Major Crash Investigation Unit. Excessive speed was a contributing factor in this crash, but impairment is not suspected.
