Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 300 block of W. Trade Street in the Central Division.  The call for service came in at 2:15 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2019.

Central Division patrol officers responded to an armed robbery call for service where a male advised that his vehicle was stolen at gunpoint.  This victim advised 911 that the suspect had not left the scene and was still sitting in the vehicle.  As he continued to speak to 911, he then told the operator that the suspect had exited the vehicle and was then shot by an unknown individual.  Upon arrival, the officers located the male robbery suspect lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound.  MEDIC arrived and pronounced this individual deceased at the scene.  His name will be released once his family has been notified.

The initial investigation is indicating that the victim of the homicide had exited out of the vehicle he had attempted to steal, without ever moving it from the parking lot, when he was shot by an unknown suspect.  A female bystander who was sitting in another car in the same parking lot had her vehicle shot into but she was not injured.  A nearby occupied apartment on 5th street was also struck by a bullet, no one was injured there either.

Homicide Detectives are currently canvassing the area to determine whether there are any additional witnesses to this incident.  The victim of the robbery is being interviewed by Detectives as are several witnesses who have already been located.

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, Victim Services and Operations Command responded to the scene.

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.
