Central Division - Fatality in the 300 block of West Boulevard

Monday, August 12, 2019

On Sunday, August 11, 2019, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department received numerous calls from the community reporting multiple dirt bikes and ATV's driving recklessly on the streets of the City of Charlotte.

At approximately 7:57 p.m., officers responded to a report of an hit and run accident in the parking lot of the Bojangles, located at 300 West Boulevard involving dirt bikes and ATV's.  The victim advised the riders surrounded her vehicle and struck her vehicle, causing property damage.  The victim was also physically assaulted at the scene (see CMPD report 20190812195700).  A short time later, an officer on a dual sport bike located a group of the ATV and dirt bikes traveling on West Boulevard and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.  One of the dirt bikes ran off of the right side of the roadway and crashed.

Central Division Officers were then dispatched to West Boulevard and I-77 in reference to the single vehicle crash, involving a dirt bike.  Upon arrival, officers located a dirt bike on the right shoulder of the road and a male in the roadway with life-threatening injuries.  Medic arrived and transported to victim to Atrium Health Carolina's Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased by hospital staff. The victim has been identified as Michael Bernard Adams, DOB: 11/28/1985.  His family has been notified of his death.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to conduct the investigation.  The roadway evidence shows the dirt bike ran off the road to the right, made contact with the curb and struck a concrete pillar.  There is no evidence that any contact was made between the CMPD dual sport bike with any other bikes or ATV's.  The riders of the other dirt bikes and ATV's did not remain on scene to provide information to officers.

The rider was not wearing a DOT approved helmet.

Speed does not appear to be a factor in this case.  It is not known if alcohol or impairment is a factor.

The Internal Affairs Bureau is reviewing the crash and will conduct a separate internal investigation to determine whether CMPD policies and procedures were adhered to during the course of the incident.

This crash remains under investigation. Any witnesses to the crash or anyone with information, including video evidence, about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600 or a Major Crash Detective at (704) 432-2169.
